Go Mad For These March Design Tips

Mar 5th 2021

There’s no guarantee that you’ll win your office bracket challenge, but we DO guarantee these design tips will make you look and feel like a winner year-round.

STAY IN THE (COMFORT) ZONE WITH TONAL PATTERNS

If you’re not a fan of busy patterns, go tonal!

Tonal designs create depth without adding too many elements to the mix. Start with a favorite fabric or pattern, pick a color, and stick to that color range. Stores generally have their fabric selections arranged by similar colors, so it should be easy to pull together some different options.

Whether you’re pairing fabric on an ottoman or searching for the perfect accent rug, staying within a certain color palette will simplify the process.

TEXTURES FOR THE WIN

You may have heard about creating texture in your home decor… but what does that mean?

Simply put, texture is the way something feels. Something as simple as a fringed throw blanket adds dimension and depth to the visual appearance of a room.

If you aren’t intentionally adding texture to your space, a room with a monochromatic color scheme will feel flat and one-dimensional.

Here are more ways to add texture to your home:

~ Down pillows with woven textured fringe add more dimension than flat, poly-filled pillows.

~ Experiment with textured fabrics such as faux fur, woven sofa coverings, and trimmed/cut patterns.

~ Take wall art to the next level with pieces such as wall plates and sculptures.

~ Don’t forget about lighting! Harsh lights can make any accessory look flat. Ambient soft lighting can make any room feel more inviting.

~ Baskets will not only add texture, but they’re also practical! Hide your extra blankets, pillows, toys, and magazines in plain sight.

~ Don’t hesitate to layer textures. A beautiful wooden bookcase showcase sculpted pieces of art and vintage books. And a faux fur throw blanket can be accented with a tassel-edged down pillow.

~ Add texture to furniture with enhancements such as nailhead trim on a sofa or upgraded drawer pulls.

~ Last but not least, a beautiful plant can add dimension, color, and air filtration to any room.

FORGET TRIANGLE OFFENSE. TRY TRIANGLE GROUPINGS INSTEAD.

We love this visual display (created by Global Views, one of our accessors) that perfectly illustrates the concept of triangle groupings.

Displaying certain items (such as knick-knacks, tchotchkes, dishes, vases, picture frames, etc.) in a triangle form can be pleasing to the eye. It’s also an easy way to bring miscellaneous items together in one group.

If you have too many individual items for one triangle display, try multiple displays with different sizes and styles.

See? We knew geometry class would come in handy someday!

LAUNDRY MADNESS

Whether it’s a chilly spring day in March or a hot, sunny day in July, there’s always a surplus of dirty laundry just around the corner.

While you can’t prevent laundry from piling up, there are ways to hide those messy mounds.

~ Make Some Cuts

One of the best ways to hide laundry is to get rid of it! Pare down your closet by setting aside clothing that wasn’t worn in the previous season. Donating unwanted clothing can free up closet space and add some laundry relief.

~ Simple Hooks

Give your laundry the hook! Add easy-to-remove hooks on bathroom doors for towels or in the back of the closet for clothes that can be reworn.

~ Help During the Seasons

In the winter, hang snow pants on a rolling clothes rack or luggage cart and leave snow boots to dry in the garage.

In the summer, add hooks near the back door for wet towels and swimsuits to dry before they come into the house.

~ A Few Extra Drawers

Sometimes, you just need a few extra drawers. These three-drawer nightstands provide extra storage space and a spot to display framed pictures, plants, or a lamp. And nightstands aren’t just for bedrooms. Add one to a hallway or next to a chair in the living room. No one needs to know it houses your summer shorts collection.

~ Restyled Hampers

Laundry hampers have come a long way since we used them to slide down the stair. (Sorry, mom.) Today’s hampers are functional and easy on the eye. Bamboo hampers with geo patterns or the classic wicker are adorable. Plus, the lids shield our eyes from those unsightly piles of dirty laundry.

These March design tips can help you tip-off off a winning season.
