5 Fall Decorating Ideas

Oct 10th 2019

With the changing of seasons, so begins the seasonal decorating! Check out some of our favorites on fall decorating.

Who doesn’t love a porch full of pumpkins or a festive tablescape? Okay, well, maybe not everyone, but we sure we do! Here are a few of Penny Mustard’s Nicole Titschler’s (Director of Sales) thoughts and ideas on fall decorating.

1. The porch

Porch decorating has become increasingly popular – especially starting in the fall, rolling on through the holidays. These outdoor spaces give insight to the home, the tastes of the owner and can create quite the sanctuary.

“Most people decorate for the season and when you take neighborhood walks you get little snapshots of everyone’s favorites. My ultimate favorite is to see the dried corn stalks, bushels of hay and pumpkins, squashes, and gourds waiting to be carved. Warm golden shades of yellow, orange and red mums,” Nicole shares. “Porches tell a story of the family inside the home.”

Quick, easy porch or front door decorating can be as simple as a wreath on the door, a wicker basket of apples and gourds on the porch and arrangments of candle lanterns on the steps.

2. Bring in more color

Don’t hesitate to step out of the traditional autumn colors too. Nicole gets excited to find silver and turquoise pumpkins to match her decor. Metallic colored pumpkins make a great, fun fall DIY project too.

Aside from pumpkins, rich eggplant colored throws and blankets, welcome rugs in navy and gold, and shiny copper flower pots are another great way to add in more color.

3. Keep it neat

Nicole also suggests while grabbing a few new decorations, and don’t hesitate to donate a few older ones as well. It will help in keeping your decorations organized instead of overwhelming.

Create a designated space for the decore to live during the offseason. Grab some sturdy containers, create groupings, and label well (i.e. ceramics, wood, pumpkins, linens, etc.) to make the storage easy and manageable.

4. At the table

“I don’t go all out with replacing dinnerware but I do like to get new fun coffee mugs or a new cheese plate to celebrate the seasons’ change, “ Nicole says. Setting the table for that new cheese plate can be a great way to bring a bit of the fall foliage inside as well. A glass vase full of colorful leaves, bread bowls brimming with pinecones, tiny tea candles, and a row of white pumpkins marching down the center of the table can usher any table into the fall season.

5. Throughout the house

If you can’t seem to stop with the seasonal decorating, then don’t! Add some plaid throws on the guestroom bed, mason jars of wheat on the bathroom counter, a bowl of acorns in the kitchen and a basket of mums anywhere.

The lovely thing about decorating for autumn is that it can be as simple or over-the-top as you would like. It can be store-bought or homemade. It can be as Halloween or Thanksgiving or overarching fall as you desire. Whatever you decide, we want to see it! Bring us in some pics and show off your decorating talents!
