New Year, New Design Tips!

Posted by Penny Mustard on Feb 5th 2021

The new year brings in many fresh ideas and goals. We think a few design tips are the perfect place to start to get your space as ready for the year as you. Take a look at some of the favorites that have given us a new look on design in just the first few weeks of the year!

DESIGN TIP: New Year, Slimmer Options

Statistically, gym membership sales go WAY up in January. Everyone is trying to work off the holiday feasts that we made like normal this year but didn’t have the same number of guests to share in the calories. We’ve had leftovers for days!

We don’t know who needs to hear this but there are a few ‘slim’ furniture options too!

Maybe you’re looking to just take “a few inches off” and need a narrower item – like for your nightstands or end tables. If those few inches could help stop stubbed toes as you round the corner and you have a little room to downsize, then we say it is all worth it!

Measuring is so important in a room and finding what works for you is vital to harmony in your space. Oh, and it helps with the decluttering vibe too!

DESIGN TIP TUESDAY: 90s Blonde Wood Come Back

Updated from highly lacquered to a more natural finish, light woods give a modern and airy feel to interiors. As overall health and well-being shifts indoors, a blonde wood finish gives a nod to the outdoors while pairing well with raw industrial looks.

DESIGN TIP TUESDAY: Opposites Intensify

The color wheel is full of opposites. Working with those opposites or “complementary” colors intensifies the colors and can be a great tool to use in adding the finishing touches to any space.

For example, with a purple and a yellow hue opposite on the color wheel, they will strengthen each other. A great way that you can use this technique can be to make a throw pillow stand out more by adding a complementary throw blanket behind it. (Take a look at the purple/yellow and teal/orange images for reference.)

With an analogous color (colors that are next to each other on the color wheel) you will have the opposite effect. The colors will tone down something that is just a touch too bright. For example, a good way to mellow out a sofa body cloth can be by adding throw pillows in colors that would be considered analogous to it. (Check out the yellow and orange images as examples.)

Now to decide what needs to be toned down and what needs to be turned up a bit!

DESIGN TIP TUESDAY: Reimagined Wallpaper

We all had one… or we knew someone who had one: The classic wallpapered room.

Bathrooms with pastel blue and pink floral prints. Dining rooms with base paper, a chair rail paper strip, and different paper on top. Kitchens covered with chickens and other assorted farm animals. Wallpaper was EVERYWHERE.

Well, guess what? Wallpaper is back, baby! And it’s covering the walls of reno inspiration boards.

But, fear not. Manufacturers have heard the anguished wails of home renovators peeling off three different layers of wallpaper – sometimes in the same room! So they’re creating easy-to-remove wallpapers with fresh patterns such as modern florals and versatile farmhouse plank designs.

And just to think, the design tips for this year have only just started! We can’t wait to share more with you!
