Seven Furniture Spring Cleaning Tips

Apr 26th 2022

Warmer weather and more sunshine marks a special time of the year: Spring Cleaning! Clearing out your cupboards, dusting cobwebs from the corners of your ceiling, and freshening up your furniture, too. Here are a few tips to keep your fine furnishings in tip-top shape.

Vacuum it Up

When it comes to cleaning your upholstery, your vacuum is a valuable tool to pick up dust, crumbs, and pet hair. Using the appropriate attachments, go over and under the cushions and around the trim, seams, and buttons. In other words, vacuum the whole thing!

Condition the Leather

If you love your leather couch, make sure you’re taking good care of the material so it looks and feels its best for as long as possible. After wiping down your leather upholstery, apply a conditioning solution in circular motions using a soft cloth.

Spot the Stains

Life happens. Sometimes, that means stains on your furniture. Cleaning up problem spots can keep upholstery looking (and smelling) fresh as ever. After checking the cleaning instructions for your furniture’s material, follow this five-step process to tackle the stains: Vacuum the surface… use a steamer… wipe with a mild soap and water mixture… apply heavy-duty cleaners… and rinse and repeat, as needed.

Check the Crannies

When was the last time you looked in the crevices of your dining room table? Chances are, it can use some attention. Grab your vacuum and get all the dust and debris out of your furniture’s hidden corners, nooks, and crannies.

Throw it in the Wash

If your upholstery’s fabrics are washable, toss them in with the laundry! Unzip couch cushion covers and throw pillows, double-check the care label to determine the proper washing and drying conditions, and let your washing machine do all the work.

Make it Shine

For your wooden furniture, polishing is the perfect way to make it look brand new. After thoroughly cleaning your piece with mild soap and water, make it shine by applying furniture polish along the grain using a microfiber cloth.

Tighten Things Up

To keep your furniture sturdy, take time to check various screws and other fastenings. Look for wobbly chair legs, loose hinges, and squeaky drawer slides. Then, tighten and lubricate as needed.
