Awkward Easter Memories: Stories from Arvid, Ben, and Nicole!

Mar 29th 2022

Many of us celebrate Easter in meaningful ways. From church gatherings to family dinners, baskets of candy to easter egg hunts. While traditions themselves can be memorable, it’s the moments when things go awry that are often the most unforgettable.

We hope you get a chuckle from these memorable stories of Easters past.

Mission Impossible: Find the Easter Baskets (Arvid)

“When we were kids we would get Easter Baskets hidden – and on the farm that meant they could be anywhere. Dad relished the challenge of hiding them, and it seemed to bring out the inner child in him. Us kids loved it, even though we’d often have to beg him for clues…

A few of the stand-out hiding spots were:

  • Under the wooden manger that the heifers fed in
  • In the closest woods under a log
  • In the silo fill pipe
  • In the hopper of the corn picker
  • On top of the power pole in the yard

One year, after finding my Easter Basket, I was running towards the barn when suddenly our family dog, Socks, cut me off. I fell to the ground and spilled all of my treats on the grass. Then, he got busy eating, and I ran to the barn bawling with what was left of my candy. Pretty smart dog.”

Possibly the Worst Easter Dinner Ever (Ben)

“There’s one Easter that I vividly remember more than all others. We had signed a lease for our third store in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and, back in those days, we did all our own build out. (And by “we” I mean me.) I had a few guys help me a bit on the bigger portions, but it was mainly me working on opening that showroom. Lights, dividing walls, sheet rock, sanding, flooring, cleaning, setting up, etc.

I’m not even sure how many hours a week I was working, but we were scheduled to open the day after Easter, so I was on a time crunch, and that last week was a long one. I was physically very hungry from working so much, but my throat was so sore from some bug that I could barely swallow. So, I had cottage cheese and milk for my Easter dinner while I dejectedly watched everyone eating ham, rolls, potatoes, and so many more good things…”

A Rigged Easter Egg Hunt Championship (Nicole)

“Many moons ago, my seven-year-old self, along with my cousins, were all spending a splendid Easter morning at our Grandma Pat's home. Her house was full of the most beautiful, intricate tchotchkes that we all admired from afar and played around as gracefully as possible growing up. One would think it would have been the perfect haven of nooks and crannies for easter eggs to be hidden in…

Being the competitive child (and now woman) that I am, I looked forward to and had been preparing for the main event as best as I could by training my eyes to look and find all things egg-shaped for several weeks. The time had finally arrived. The whistle blew, and we were all scrambling about to fill our baskets. The Egg Champion title was up for grabs, but not if I could help it.

I looked and looked, and grew more and more anxious as I heard the other cousins squealing with joy with each new egg they found while my basket was still barren. This went on for what felt like an eternity, and I couldn't understand how I could be failing so terribly... This was my jam! I had trained for this for seven years, and I couldn't find ONE?! Finally, time was called, and everyone gathered to show our bounty while I stood there with the only bone dry basket.

I then learned that my lovely (and now famous artist) Aunt Dawn had handpainted the most beautiful easter eggs in all the land in preparation for our annual family Easter egg hunt. I hadn't seen the eggs prior to their careful placement, but passed by them countless times. I had been lightly pushing aside and holding my breath around the gorgeous eggs because I thought they were part of my grandmother's precious easter decorations.

Turns out, they were the ACTUAL real eggs that we were searching for the whole time. My cousins who were Aunt Dawn’s children had the advantage because they knew what to look for. I, however, will always remember it as the Easter I questioned everything I ever knew to be true.”

From all of us at Penny Mustard, we wish you a joyous Easter holiday. We hope you find your Easter basket, enjoy a satisfying Easter dinner, and don’t mix up the Easter eggs.
