What’s in a Name?: Five Guys

Aug 7th 2023

If you're a fan of mouthwatering burgers and delicious fries, you've probably heard of Five Guys. This beloved fast-food chain has gained a cult following… but do you know the story behind its success? (Spoiler: It started with, you guessed it, five guys!)

In the late ‘80s, four brothers from the Washington D.C. area recieved a life-changing ultimatum from their parents: “Start a business, or go to college.” Soon thereafter, a set of college savings funds became the initial investment in a burger restaurant that would go on to worldwide acclaim.

The Five (or Six) Guys

In 1986, Jerry Murrell and his wife Janie opened a small carry-out burger joint in Arlington, Virginia where they enlisted the help of their four sons, Jim, Matt, Chad, and Ben, to run the business. The name “Five Guys” was a playful nod to the family's tight-knit involvement in the company's operations. The Murrell clan poured their passion and dedication into creating mouthwatering burgers that captured their customers’ hearts and taste buds.

After a few years, the family gained a new business partner with the birth of Tyler – the fifth Murrell brother. The restaurant’s name took on a slightly different meaning, but still effectively represented the heart of the business. Today, each of the five brothers have unique prominent positions within the company.

Local to National to Global Success

From its inception, Five Guys has focused on providing simple, no-frills burgers with high-quality ingredients. The restaurant quickly gained a reputation for fresh, made-to-order burgers, more-than-generous portion sizes, and signature hand-cut fries cooked in pure peanut oil. Word quickly spread about their tasty offerings, and locals began flocking to their door.

Despite the family's initial intention to keep the business small, the demand for Five Guys burgers grew rapidly. In 2003, the Murrells made a momentous decision to franchise the business, expanding beyond the original Arlington location. This allowed the company to introduce their iconic burgers to cities across the countr and, eventually, around the world.

Quality and Simplicity

One key aspect that sets Five Guys apart from other fast-food chains is its commitment to quality and simplicity. They use only the finest ingredients, such as never-frozen beef patties, handmade fries from Idaho potatoes, and peanut oil for frying.

Customization is another hallmark of Five Guys. From toppings like cheese, bacon, and grilled onions to the famous "All The Way" option that includes all the available toppings, customers have the freedom to personalize their burgers (with over in over 250,000 combinations!) The notion of "more is more" has become synonymous with Five Guys, as they generously pile on the toppings and encourage customers to create their ultimate burger masterpiece.

A Burger Phenomenon

Today, Five Guys has become a phenomenon, with thousands of locations worldwide. Despite its rapid growth and international success, the company remains committed to its roots. Each burger is still made to order, ensuring freshness and consistency with every bite. The focus on quality ingredients and simple-yet-delicious menu offerings has solidified Five Guys' place as a favorite fast-food destination.

But, Five Guys’ success can be attributed to more than just burgers and fries. Their dedicationt to providing exceptional customer service and creating a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere has played a vital role in their popularity. The friendly staff and vibrant, no-frills ambiance completes the overall experience.

From humble beginnings to global burger sensation, Five Guys is a prime example of how staying true to your roots and having an unwavering commitment to quality can be a recipe for success.
